WEDNESDAY 1st NOVEMBER

York's ample sufficiency of water continues  - hosepipe ban not envisaged in the near future !!!

Your intrepid webmaster ventured out today to witness the scenes of water excess of proportions not seen in York for 400 years (when he was only a lad !)

These pictures give you some idea of the extent of the flooding and as such Rowing Training is off for a day or two - the new training session plan which

will come into operation as soon as possible will involve doing interesting and amusing things with mops, buckets, sponges and lifting boats back - watch this page for further news.

Every cloud has a silver lining - the evacuation of the boathouse yesterday does mean that the Trailer is already loaded for the event at the weekend !!

TUESDAY 31st OCTOBER

York is more than amply supplied

The club house is flooded but Members again rallied round and moved all the singles upstairs and the bigger fours and eights were trailered to higher ground.

Oceans of thanks ( excuse the pun ) to all those who pitched up with either waders, wellies ( or in some cases bare legs and shorts ) to help with the evacuation.

The web site will try to keep members up to date with the situation and let every one know the latest news on this page.

It will be all hands to the pumps ( maybe literarily at the end of the week ) but as always the show will go on.  Small boats head - 19th - here's hoping !!

Just to show we have a sense of humour the Men's Captain is currently dealing with an enquiry which has come off the internet from a guy who is interested in joining, who rowed across the Atlantic in 1997 - maybe he wants the greater challenge of rowing across the Ouse at the weekend !!

BREAKING NEWS: Flood 'critical' at dawn

LATEST FROM

YORKSHIRE

EVENING

PRESS

Tuesday 31 OCT

A stark warning went out today that York's flood defences could be breached by the rising waters of the River Ouse.

The "worst case scenario" is that water levels could reach their highest point for 400 years, according the council safety chiefs.

The Environment Agency's Colin Atkinson said they believed the water level would peak at five metres, just below the defence level of about 5.5 metres.

But it was possible the waters would "overtop" the defences, and Mr Atkinson estimated if that did happen the crucial period would probably be at first light tomorrow.

Residents of Malton and Norton were bracing themselves for more flood related misery tonight after Environment Agency chiefs forecast no let up in the rising water levels until midday tomorrow.

An Emergency co-ordination room has been set up at Ryedale House, which will be manned by police, fire and council staff. It will be open 24-hours-a-day, and backed by an information line which people can access by ringing our normal number.

For help and advice on how to prepare for the floods, or to request sandbags, ring 01653 600666.
