Bradford Autumn Regatta 15th September 2007
York City Rowing Club’s Junior’s recorded 15 event victories at Bradford Autumn Regatta over the 600 meter sprint course, following the disappointment of several summer regattas being flooded off. Georgina Hood and Becky Briggs won, in their first regatta, with Iona Harrap and Rebecca Turley plus cox Charlie Nicholson, in under 15 quadruple sculls. They beat Bradford and Hollingworth Lake with some ease. Briggs and Turley also won in Under 14 double sculls while Harrap beat several older girls in under 16 single sculls. The Junior girls also took the novice quad trophy. Joseph Dale, also in his first regatta won, his first two races in under 14 sculls confidently, but was beaten by a narrow margin in the final. Owen Harrison and Tom Calvert won Under 16 A and B sculls respectively and James Reeder Senior Class 4 sculls. Harrison and Reeder also won Senior Class 4 double sculls beating crews from Liverpool, Talking Tarn and Bradford. Nick Bartlett and Joe Feeney won the under 18 double sculls in their first doubles event together, although still being in the Under 16 category. They beat 4 crews from Trafford RC and one from Doncaster all by over a length. Chris Wright and Tom Korobejko had a tough final against Bradford Grammar but maintained their long unbeaten run in doubles. These boys along with Charlie Nicholson and Steven Catchpole formed various combinations to win 5 quadruple sculls events in different age groups and senior categories. In the last race of the day they beat the fancied local Bradford crew to pick up the top event of Senior Class 3 quads. Kezia Buckley won four events in the coxes seat and one rowing in the Women’s novice quad with Iona Harrap, Ruth Godfrey and Izzy Clegg. Steven Maude and Alec Gilchrist won veteran novice double sculls to cap a good day for the club.
FISA World Masters Regatta - Zagreb, Croatia 6th – 9th September 2007. Ten athletes from York City Rowing Club’s Women’s Squad travelled to Zagreb, Croatia for the FISA World Masters Rowing Championships. Over 3 days seven crews raced in very close fought battles. The coxed four of Becky Raines, Ruth Easterbrook, Rachel Jones, Karen Williams and cox Helena Smallman-Smith narrowly missed out on the gold medal by 0.01 second after racing in a men’s heavy weight boat with men’s oars. The same crew went on to race as a coxless four and after a close race finished in bronze position behind Italy and Germany. The double of Loretta Williams and Jill Salvin were unfortunately unable to retain their title due to illness and finished 5th behind strong crews from Russia and Germany. A second double of Esther Clutton and Julia Schumacher also fought a gutsy battle and finished 6th overall. Technical failure limited the success of the 8+ which lost out on a podium position in the last 250 metres. The crew of Becky Rains, Ruth Easterbrook, Rachel Jones, Karen Williams, Esther Clutton, Emily Hulley, Cath Smith, Julia Schumacher and Cox Loretta Williams finished in 4th place just 6 seconds behind the winning German crew. The coxless pair of Becky Rains and Ruth Easterbrook also narrowly missed out on the gold medal finishing within a second of the winning crew and the quad of Loretta Williams, Jill Salvin, Emily Hulley and Julia Schumacher also had a closely fought battle with Italy finishing in the bronze position. This is the second time athletes from York City Women’s Squad have competed in this event and all hope to build on this success in the future World Masters Championships.
